Venice Beach & Santa Monica Pier

One more time trip to Los Angeles, and this time my brother flew there from Finland to meet us. We spent 6 days in LA, and our first hotel was in Beverly Hills and then in West Hollywood. With him I went to Venice Beach Boardwalk and Santa Monica Pier again, but luckily I had already taken almost all the possible photos so I didn't need to spend a lot of time for that this time. We spent 10 bucks for the sky wheel, in which you apparently could have spent as much time as you wanted to for that price. After few rounds we realized we might need to tell them when we are done, so then we were trying to casually wave for another 2 rounds to show we're ready to go. No more LA for me at least for the rest of the year!

On the second day I started my walk from Marina del Rey area, which I had seen from the car on the previous night. Oh, and it definitely seemed much shorter road when sitting in the car, it was bit of a walk. I had noticed this Lincoln Boulevard, which had lot of interesting looking places. I mean probably for you they don't seem as interesting as for me, I just for some reason happen to have some fetish for all kinds of signs, motels, gas stations, diners etc... All of them are just so different than back home, and I have been huge into 50's style since I was a teenager. I used to collect all kinds of Coca-Cola, Marilyn Monroe, Jack Daniel's, Route 66 etc. stuff, and my walk in closet is still full of them. I have everything for kitchen as 50's diner style, and couple of Coca-Cola fridges (one wooden and one that actually works), wooden gas pump etc... Jake also bought me a real vintage Coke dining table and chairs as a birthday present. Unfortunately our decorative eyes do not match that well really, he likes the farm house style and I'm all about the 50's. But we compromise, and to be honest I have a lot more to think or worry than my decoration. But who knows, maybe if I win the lottery, there will be mint green plastic looking kitchen with black and white or pink and white checkered floor waiting for him, and he can find his bed set into this lovely old American car which is obviously mint green as well. And while I'm gone, the farm house hardwood floors are back with all rustic style, and I'll find haystacks covering the bedroom floor as a bed where I'm now supposed to sleep in. Anyway, I used to share to my old blog when I bought something new, so I could show here again all the cool stuff I've got during the years.

Toisena aamuna lähdin kävelemään Marina Del Reyn alueella olevaa Lincoln Bulevardia, jonka olin edellispäivänä nähnyt taksista. Kiinnitin huomiota erilaisiin rakennuksiin jotka näyttivät kivoilta, ja yritin pistää kovassa vauhdissa mieleen jonkun tienviitan tai muun kyltin, josta muistaisin mihin kohtaan tulla. Paikka oli sen verran kauempana hotellilta, että jouduin siis ottamaan Uberin. Pääsin kuitenkin mihin halusin, mutta melko nopeasti tuli huomattua, että tie oli hieman pidempi kävellen, kun auton kyydissä huristellessa. Sain kuitenkin käveltyä sen matkan mitä olin autosta nähnytkin, ja jatkoin siitä eteenpäin taas autolla. Kuten aiemmin mainitsin, ei olisi selkä eikä kello kestänyt ns. turhia kävelyitä. Kellekään ei varmaan ole jäänyt epäselväksi millaisista paikoista tykkään, en tiedä onko siellä ketään jolle iskee samanlaiset maisemat? Jostain syystä olen kova erilaisten kylttien ja merkkien perään. Sen lisäksi dinerit, huoltoasemat, autopesulat ja muut vastaavat viehättävät, joka tietysti paikallisen mielestä voi olla hyvinkin outoa, mutta on ne vaan sen verran mielenkiintoisemman näköisiä tuolla päin maailmaa, vaikka niihinkin varmaa olisi luullut jo tottuvan. 

Olen melko nuoresta, noin 15 vuotiaasta asti tykännyt kaikesta vintage ja retro meiningistä, johon monet näistä jutuista vähän viittaavat. Olen kerännyt siitä asti kaikkea Coca-Cola, Marilyn Monroe, Jack Daniel's, Route 66 jne. tavaraa, joita aiemmat blogin lukijat ehkä muistavatkin. Sen lisäksi kaikkea mikä liittyy juurikin huoltoasemiin, autoihin, casinoihin, dinereihin ja niin edelleen. Minulla on esimerkiksi puinen bensatankki, pari Coca-Cola jääkaappia joista toinen puinen ja toinen ihan jääkaappi, ja keittiön koko varustus 50-luvun diner tyyliin. Jake osti myös synttärilahjaksi mulle pöydän ja 4 nahkatuolia aitoa kokis vintagea. Harmi vaan meidän maut sisustuksen suhteen eivät oikein kohtaa, sillä Jake tykkää enemmän sellaisesta maalaistalon tyylistä... Joskus sitten katsotaan millainen kompromissi tehdään mutta ihan suoraan sanottuna en usko että saisin mitään taloa kokonaan sen tyyliseksi kun haaveissani haluaisin, ellen voittaisi lotossa. Todennäköisempää on kuitenkin lottovoitto, kuin se että Jake haluaisi mintun vihreän muovisen keittiön mustavalkoisella shakkilauta lattialla, ja patjansa pönöttävän vanhassa amerikanraudan romussa. Toistaiseksi on ollut tärkeämpää ajateltavaa kuin sisustus, enkä ole sitä enää niin paljoa ajatellut kuin nuorempana, ja jäänyt vähän se keräilykin vähemmälle kun tällä hetkellä tavara menisi lähinnä varastoon, jossa ne nytkin Suomessa ovat. Voisin joskus kuvailla niitä tänne, vaikka olen mä joskus kauan sitten sen tehnytkin :P

Los Angeles

The trip to California continues from Los Angeles and Hollywood. From Hollywood boulevard I continued walking towards West Hollywood and Beverly Hills, streets like Santa Monica Boulevard and Melrose Avenue. One of the destinations was Kat Von D's High Voltage Tattoo, and another one was DollsKill store, which ended up being pretty far, so I don't recommend walking there unless your main goal really is to walk. I wanted to see areas that are not so touristic anyway, so I didn't mind walking because at the same time I saw different places and took lot of pictures. It was pretty quiet on these smaller streets. I would have wanted to walk much longer but after it got dark, I couldn't see much anymore because lots of these streets didn't have any lights, so went back to downtown LA with an uber... Unfortunately we needed to leave to San Diego the next morning so this visit was pretty short. There might be couple of occasions why I would visit Los Angeles next year, so hopefully then I would get to see Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach, which are the places I haven't seen yet in LA! And even I remember driving around in Beverly Hills 3 years ago, I would still want to do this very touristic tour where a bus takes you to see the celebrity houses, lol! So until next time!

Seuraavana Kalifornian reissulta vuorossa Hollywood Bulevardin ulkopuolelle jäävät alueet. Walk of Famelta lähdin kävelemään kohti West Hollywoodia ja Beverly Hillsiä. Kävelin suurempia katuja kuten Santa Monica bulevardia ja Melrose Avenueta, mutta suurin osa kaduista oli pieniä. Tästä syystä jouduinkin palaamaan heti pimeän tullen takaisin hotellille, sillä hädintuskin näin eteeni näillä pimeillä kujilla, joissa ei välttämättä ollut mitään katuvaloja. Yhtenä päämääränäni oli Kat Von D'n tatuointiliike, ja toisena tänä vuonna avattu DollsKill vaateliike. Tarkoituksenani oli kävellä, nähdä ja kuvata paikkoja, mutta muuten en suosittelisi tuota matkaa huvikseen vaan kävelemään, oli se sen verran pitkä (reilu 1h). Valitettavasti jouduimme lähtemään seuraavana aamuna San Diegoon, joten visiitti jäi lyhyeksi. Ensi vuonna saattaa olla pari mahdollista reissua Los Angelesiin, joten toivon mukaan silloin pääsisin käymään Santa Monica Pierissä ja Venice Beachillä, jotka ovatkin melkein ainoita paikkoja jotka tuolla päin vielä käymättä, ja olisin tällä kerrallakin halunnut käydä... Vaikka Beverly Hillsissä vähän on tullut ajeltua pari vuotta sitten, haluaisin silti myös sellaiselle turistikierrokselle, jossa käydään katsomassa julkkisten ökytaloja, lol. Ensi kertaan siis!
